Portrait of Mr Anurag Garg
Where it began

"My interest in eyes began during medical school. During my fourth year, I undertook an intercalated Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience at Imperial College London, where we had a module on Vision. Learning about the way the eye captures light and the brain constructs the world we see as part of higher visual processing struck me as one of biology's most remarkable achievements. That spark never left me, and it guided everything that followed."

Mr Anurag Garg is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, one of London's leading academic teaching hospitals. After graduating from Imperial College School of Medicine with Distinction and a First Class Honours intercalated BSc in Neuroscience, he trained across some of the UK's most respected centres, including Moorfields Eye Hospital — widely regarded as the world's leading specialist eye hospital — and St Thomas' Hospital. He completed two glaucoma fellowships, at Moorfields Eye Hospital and St Thomas' Hospital respectively. He also completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Cataract & Refractive Surgery from Ulster University, before taking up his substantive consultant post at Guy's & St Thomas' in 2025.

A comprehensive ophthalmologist and a subspecialist

What sets Mr Garg's practice apart is the combination of broad clinical experience and focused specialist expertise — three areas that together define his approach to private practice.

Research has been a defining part of Mr Garg's career. He completed a Doctor of Medicine (MD[Res]) at University College London under the supervision of Professor Gus Gazzard — ranked among the world's leading ophthalmologists and widely regarded as one of the foremost authorities in glaucoma — focusing on the clinical outcomes, predictors of success, and safety of Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) in the treatment of glaucoma. This work was undertaken as part of the landmark multicentre LiGHT Trial, which Professor Gazzard led, and which directly influenced national guidance on the first-line treatment of glaucoma in the UK.

He has authored over 25 peer-reviewed publications in leading international journals including The Lancet, Ophthalmology, Eye, and IOVS, with multiple first and senior author papers focusing on glaucoma outcomes and laser treatment. His research has been recognised with several competitive awards and grants, including funding from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, the International Glaucoma Association, and Fight for Sight.

Mr Garg has presented his research at national and international ophthalmology meetings, and was awarded the UK & Eire Glaucoma Society Prize for Best Free Paper in 2019. That same year, the International Glaucoma Association Award for Excellence in Glaucoma Care was awarded to the LiGHT Trial Study Group, of which Mr Garg was a member.

Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Garg continues to contribute to ophthalmic research. He is currently involved as a collaborator in cataract-related clinical trials, with further publications in preparation — reflecting his ongoing commitment to evidence-based practice and the advancement of patient care.
